Why a catalogue beats a feed
A feed optimises for the next scroll. A catalogue optimises for the next decision. Only one of them respects your evening.
A feed has one goal: keep you scrolling. It succeeds by making sure you never reach the bottom, never finish, never get the small satisfaction of a completed thing.
A catalogue is the opposite contract. It has edges. You can see all of it, finish all of it, and put it down. Shangpai is built as a catalogue on purpose: 120 entries, ten sections, twelve each, one reference code per entry.
The strange result is that a smaller library gets used more. When the whole magazine browses in minutes, people come back more often — because leaving feels possible, so arriving feels free.
